EU-funded Assistance for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Some Member States

- Abstract -

SMEs have enjoyed various links to the support system from Structural Funds in countries where areas and actions targeting industrial modernisation, economic competitiveness and an improvement in human resources play a more significant role among operational programmes and have greater resources. As regards development strategies concentrating on large investments, their room for manoeuvre in gaining access to the assistance is, however, more limited. Many countries endeavoured to ensure that the SME sector was not only linked successfully to the national market, and that not only this process was focused on, but that SMEs should open out to the European markets as well. In this regard the national and regional initiatives of Ireland and Spain serve as good examples.
